World Mental Health Day | time to talk & time to act
World Mental Health Day is on 10th October every year. The objective is to raise an increasing awareness of mental health issues globally and mobilise efforts to improve mental health services and support.
It’s a day that provides an opportunity for every stakeholder coping with, or working in support of mental health issues, to talk about those issues, in hope that the world will listen. How can we work together as organisations to improve mental health care services, and as individuals how can we be more open in our discussions about those issues? Can we break down the barriers and to start to put an end to stigma and discrimination? It’s a day when it’s ‘time to talk’ – but it’s also now a ‘time to act’.
According to the ‘World Health Organisation’:
IF WE DON’T ACT URGENTLY, BY 2030 DEPRESSION WILL BE THE LEADING ILLNESS GLOBALLY
Today, 1 in 3 families are coping with someone with depression.
10% of the UK population suffer the symptoms of depression in a given week.
50% of people go on to have a second episode.
80% of those go on to have three or more episodes.
Depression can have tragic consequences, with a high risk of suicide, it impacts families and wider society. Costs to the UK economy are expected to rise to £12 billion a year, within the next decade alone.
It’s quite appropriate that at 10.00am on 10th October Human-Nature Escapes CIC will be doing a pitch to a funding body, to try and secure funding to roll-out our services and do something positive in North Staffordshire – and ‘ACT’ on Mental Health.
Following our pitch, we’ll be joining the Keele University team doing their bit for student wellbeing on WMHD16 – So let’s all make 10th October a ‘Time to Talk’ and a ‘Time to Act’ day.
